Why Busting the Walking Football Myths is Important

Why Busting the Walking Football Myths is Important

And Why I Wrote The Book

When I first laced up my boots for walking football, I had no idea just how many myths and misconceptions surrounded the game.

“Too slow.”
“Not real football.”
“Only for people who can’t run anymore.”

I heard it all — and honestly, it frustrated me.

The truth is, walking football is one of the fastest-growing versions of the beautiful game, and it’s changing lives in ways most people don’t realise. That’s why I decided to write Myth-Busting Walking Football. Not to lecture. Not to preach. But to shine a light on what walking football really is — and why it matters.

The Myths That Needed Busting

Like any new(ish) sport, walking football has carried a lot of baggage. Some think it’s just a gentle kickabout. Others imagine it’s only for people who’ve “given up” the real game. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Here are just a few myths the book tackles head-on (without giving too much away 😉):

  • Myth #1: Walking football is boring.

  • Myth #2: It’s not “real” football.

  • Myth #3: You have to be old or unfit to play.

The reality? Walking football is competitive, inclusive, and most importantly — fun. And the benefits go far beyond the pitch.

The Benefits of Walking Football

One of the reasons I felt so strongly about writing this book is the sheer number of people who’ve rediscovered themselves through walking football.

  • Health and fitness: Players shed weight, lower blood pressure, and boost mobility — all while having fun.

  • Mental wellbeing: It combats loneliness, reduces stress, and creates purpose.

  • Community spirit: It connects people from all walks of life, often sparking friendships that last well beyond the final whistle.

  • Football without expiry: Whether you’re 40, 50, 60, 70 or beyond, there’s a place for you on the pitch.

I’ve seen people in their 80s controlling the ball with the same flair they had decades earlier — and the smiles say it all.

Why I Had to Write the Book

The more I played, the more I realised walking football isn’t just a game. It’s a movement. A way of giving people back something they thought they’d lost.

That’s why Myth-Busting Walking Football isn’t just about tackling the common myths — it’s about celebrating the stories, the laughs, the rivalries, and the retro-style joy that football brings us at every stage of life.

For me, the book was about more than writing. It was about changing perceptions. Too many people dismiss walking football before they’ve even tried it. This book is my way of showing the world: if you love football, there’s no reason to ever stop playing.

Who the Book is For

  • Players who are curious about giving walking football a go.

  • Coaches and organisers who want to grow the game.

  • Fans who think football should be for life, not just for youth.

  • Anyone who loves a good story about passion, resilience, and sport.

If that sounds like you — you’ll enjoy it.

Final Thought

Walking football isn’t about slowing down. It’s about keeping the game alive for everyone, at every age.

Because here’s the truth:
If you’re old enough, you’re good enough.
