Knocked Out by the Dentist… But Not for Long!
“Knocked Out by the Dentist… But Not for Long!”
This week, the toughest opponent I’ve faced hasn’t been a tricky winger or a misplaced pass — it’s been the dentist’s chair. Two teeth yanked out, an infection to battle, and a steady stream of antibiotics and painkillers have had me sidelined. Not quite the comeback story I had in mind.
Here’s the thing: when football — even walking football — becomes part of your weekly rhythm, missing just one session feels like a hole in the week. It’s not just the exercise I miss; it’s the laughs, the cheeky digs, the nods of encouragement, and that little buzz you only get when you’re out there with your teammates. For me, walking football has always been as much about the people as the game.
Being stuck at home with a sore jaw has reminded me of something important: football is a habit, and a good one at that. But like all habits, it needs protecting. Skip too many weeks, and suddenly it’s easier to stay on the sofa. That’s why I tell anyone who asks — as soon as you’re able, get yourself back to a session. Even if you’re only at 70%, being on the pitch, feeling the ball at your feet, and soaking up the atmosphere will do wonders for body and spirit.
Setbacks happen. Illness, injury, or, in my case, a mouth full of gaps — they’ll all knock you off course at some point. But what really counts is the coming back. And you can bet your boots (well, walking boots) that I’ll be back out there as soon as I’m able to play without worrying about the medicine. I’m already dreaming of that first touch, the shouts from teammates, and a few laughs afterwards.
So here’s my nudge for you: if you’ve had a setback, don’t let it keep you on the bench. Lace up, turn up, and take part — even half a session is better than none. The game will be there waiting, and so will the laughs.
